What more could one want? A pattern perhaps, and maybe a couple of diagrams to go with it? <br />

<br />
With colouring books being 'all the rage', this is a great way to keep it all together. Not into colouring? Perfect also for keeping your pencil, eraser, sharpener... headache tablets, all in the one place!<br />
<br />
Please note, the measurements given below are for A5 size (standard small notebook). There are a couple of little colouring in books out there, so if you making a cover specifically for one of these, reduce by 1" in both width and length, for ALL cutting directions.<br />
<br />
<b><u>Requirements</u></b><br />
<b><u><br /></u></b>
2 x fat quarters (for main, lining and pockets)<br />
10" x 14" piece of pellon or wadding scrap.<br />
30cm med/ light weight woven interfacing (or scraps),<br />
12" (minimum) zip (plastic teeth is possible so you can cut it to length).<br />
<br />
<b>Cutting</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
Main;<br />
cut 1 x (10" x 14")<br />
<br />
Pockets;<br />
cut 2 x (3.5" x 10")<br />
cut 2 x (7.5" x 10")<br />
cut 1 x (8" x 10")<br />
<br />

cut 1 x (10" x 14")<br />
<br />
pellon/wadding;<br />
cut 1 x (9.5" x 13.5")<br />
<br />
med/ light weight woven interfacing;<br />
cut 2 x (3" x 10")<br />
cut 2 x (7" x 10")<br />
cut 1 x (8" x 10")<br />
<br />
<b>Instructions</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
Start by preparing all your pieces. <br />
<br />
1. On the wrong side of your main fabric, centre the pellon, turn over and iron in place (rough side is the glue side). If you do not have an iron-on product, either use a couple pins to hold in place, or use a little spray basting glue. <br />
<br />
2. Take (3" x 10") piece of interfacing and iron onto wrong side of (3.5" x 10") pocket piece, leaving a 1/2" gap along one long side as shown in photo. Repeat for 2 piece.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
3. Repeat with both (7" x 10") pieces of interfacing with (7.5" x 10") pocket pieces, again leaving 1/2" gap along long side.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRik5n3yi-gNYjXbDidvaAL71cqemOQyqZO4bBL3u3xLFnXHYT7or0dW5UReDItSThelh4x5pDC8F61QPY8YwjjTmPS8cQybHOlj5WnvkIORDT6U9Kk0dWvRIs62PiNMrc_n9i4B7XmUNL/s1600/book1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="170" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRik5n3yi-gNYjXbDidvaAL71cqemOQyqZO4bBL3u3xLFnXHYT7or0dW5UReDItSThelh4x5pDC8F61QPY8YwjjTmPS8cQybHOlj5WnvkIORDT6U9Kk0dWvRIs62PiNMrc_n9i4B7XmUNL/s320/book1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
4. Iron the (8" x 10") interfacing onto the (8" x 10") pocket piece, with right sides out, fold in half and press.<br />
<br />
5. Using the photo below as a guide, take both (3.5" x 10") pocket pieces, and place right sides together, ensuring the side with the interfacing gap is at the top.<br />
<br />
6. Now, take your zip, and sandwich between both pocket pieces, right side of zip facing down, zip head to your left, and line up all raw edges. Because your zip is a little longer than you need, centre the zip, so the head and end are well out of the way. Pin in place.<br />
<br />
<i>*tip It is important to have it lined up in exactly this matter, facing the way indicated, otherwise you will end up with zip head upside down in your finished project (.... as I did in my prototype!)</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi16F4wchShcmugKXTMWEXtR0M19_2m189z2T_sTA995P9eKArMi0uD9QHvrR0ZsaU8A2DdsjYeVjOYTZdydXmTB04bKhdAYCWBbnOfXys0itCYEllSGMT2UlDTeNbUaQ2adCpsv6n_Fqck/s1600/book2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi16F4wchShcmugKXTMWEXtR0M19_2m189z2T_sTA995P9eKArMi0uD9QHvrR0ZsaU8A2DdsjYeVjOYTZdydXmTB04bKhdAYCWBbnOfXys0itCYEllSGMT2UlDTeNbUaQ2adCpsv6n_Fqck/s320/book2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA3-hUFE-wgpOHZbhgkoHuA6m6yhA1mlMzUtwK17Pf1e_Alan_pwXqcvI3BKO2zYn9V6ePtZI2Hnic11exYk8YLHMKipGkv81ghZE_YcIoFFZVCCS7UViHhI_xqFeZoLwvqY6Z-P58aMRx/s1600/book3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA3-hUFE-wgpOHZbhgkoHuA6m6yhA1mlMzUtwK17Pf1e_Alan_pwXqcvI3BKO2zYn9V6ePtZI2Hnic11exYk8YLHMKipGkv81ghZE_YcIoFFZVCCS7UViHhI_xqFeZoLwvqY6Z-P58aMRx/s320/book3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
7. Now, sewing zips is not quite as scary as people think, especially if you have the head out of the way. Zipper feet are great, as they allow you sew closer to the teeth, and a 1/4" seam allowance is a good guide. If you don't have a zipper foot, use your 1/4" foot, and sew as close to the teeth as your foot allows.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjjvJIsDvvCvm5CSh2aLbeut5IVULIMqzC_Cs9Fxb-c23hsV7gvwWOmYGpr93fr53bvDOqxmsxxVV_ecEP1O108EknHsUcXY3QUklpQQao7cukBiJLBINzWi_pXv54yFSQvzKpEcuyhBB9/s1600/book4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjjvJIsDvvCvm5CSh2aLbeut5IVULIMqzC_Cs9Fxb-c23hsV7gvwWOmYGpr93fr53bvDOqxmsxxVV_ecEP1O108EknHsUcXY3QUklpQQao7cukBiJLBINzWi_pXv54yFSQvzKpEcuyhBB9/s320/book4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
8. Flip these pieces out of the way (right sides facing out). Once again, line up and sandwich the remaining raw edge of the zip with both (7.5" x 10") pocket pieces, ensuring the short sides are in line with the sides of the piece you have already completed. (so they both meet the zip at the same 'height'. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
9. Sew in place as in step 7.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
10. Flip fabric out so both sides are now right sides out, with the zip in the middle (ish!). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
11. I always like to do a top stitch next to my zips as I think it gives a night neat finish. This is a little line of stitching about 1/8th inch from the seam. Pin first, to make sure the fabric is pulled firmly and evenly away from the zip, then sew (still easier to use your zipper foot at this stage if you have one) Your piece should now look like the picture below.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
12. With the right side of the zip facing out, fold 'pocket' in half.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
13. Flatten and pin to hold in place. Put a pin either side of zipper head (refer to photo below), then pull the zipper head down a couple of inches. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
14. Cut off each end of zip, in line with raw edges. </div>
<div>

<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Assembly</b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
15. Place down main fabric piece, right side facing up. Place the large pocket (one with zip),with zip facing down on the right hand side, lining up the raw edges. Place the remaining pocket on the left hand side, again lining up raw edges. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
16. Now place your lining fabric, right side down, on top. Pin around all edges.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
17. Sew around edges using a 1cm seam allowance (approx 3/8") leaving an approximate 3" gap bottom centre for turning. If you have a walking foot, I would suggest you use it. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
18. Clip the corners, Turn out. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
19. Push out corners and seams. and pin close to the edge. Top stitch around edge for neat finish, and this also closes the gap at the bottom. Make sure not to top stitch more than 1/8" as you may make your cover a tight fit. If you prefer not to top stitch, no problem, just close the gap using a little ladder stitch. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<i>*tip it is always a good idea to test a book in the cover before top stitching just in case your fit is a little tight. </i> </div>

As you can see in my original at the top of the post... .. I made my zip pocket 2 tone, probably because I was using up little pieces of fabric that I had. So don't worry about the 'rules', just have fun! (unless the 'rules' are measurements... then stick with the rules!)</div>

Feel free to share this pattern around, the more people that use it, (and enjoy it) the happier I am!</div>

It has been beyond way too long. And yes, I kind of gave up on my blog moved over to (seemingly) more popular Facebook and Instagram. But I like blog and have realised that, here, I can 'do' and 'explain' things in more detail. I'm hoping to add some tutorials soon, so please come back and visit. <br />
<br />
So today! Wow, I finally got the see the new Quilters Companion which was released today. It features my 'newspaper roses' quilt. I was really pleased that they were able to show both the versions of this quilt that I made, as I always think it makes it look so different,. What can inspire someone in one colour way, another may not look twice at which I always find fascinating. <br />

They also did a 'little' profile on me (which I didn't find until a couple of hours later!), which I'm way too embarrassed to read. They have also popped in a photo of my forever loved "Aunt Millie's Garden" quilt, a pattern by "Piece o'cake". </div>

So tomorrow, feeling all pumped and raring to go, I'm off to Melbourne to the annual Australian Quilt Market. It is literally better than being a kid in a shop, and I nearly need to wear a bib for the amount I'm drooling!</div>

After our little trip to Bali last year an opportunity was placed in my lap (literally too good to pass up) and I opened up an online Batik Fabric shop, called <a href="http://www.batiktrader.com.au/" target="_blank">'Batik Trader'</a>. So I have been madly putting together beautiful batik quilts, and subsequent kits to have available in my shop. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvwvgbHVwx_8OtzFIKyC6dY9ZdLX9il6REdM-JALcRDCgIzLiozuyQ5d02t3yf-UNxhsXAa0zBfTmvrVv_Kl3wHrV0bKG6G8XzFW4vdV4IdaurP5u9bBsbUPqwO6p8cIlPDMuoxAiWu2xO/s1600/purple+'bali+squares'+kit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvwvgbHVwx_8OtzFIKyC6dY9ZdLX9il6REdM-JALcRDCgIzLiozuyQ5d02t3yf-UNxhsXAa0zBfTmvrVv_Kl3wHrV0bKG6G8XzFW4vdV4IdaurP5u9bBsbUPqwO6p8cIlPDMuoxAiWu2xO/s1600/purple+'bali+squares'+kit.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
While I have enjoyed this new challenge, I have felt a little boxed in. I have desperately missed designing and working with 'all' fabrics that really make my heart sing. <br />
<br />
You know how sometimes the universe tends to align, and this just fall into place? Well, I feel that I have been blessed for this to happen to me over the last few months. I have had some wonderful encouragement from amazing people and a couple of opportunities have come my way. I will now be teaching at 3 different shops in South East Queensland. I will continue to teach at <a href="http://www.thequilterscorner.com.au/" target="_blank">The Quilters Corner</a>, but will also now teach at <a href="http://www.patchworkangel.com.au/" target="_blank">The Patchwork Angel</a> on the Sunshine Coast and <a href="http://www.peppermintstitches.com.au/" target="_blank">Peppermint Stitches</a>. I can't tell you how excited I am about spreading my wings and my head is buzzing with lots of new ideas, not to mention techniques to teach.<br />
<br />
As I am taking this new direction, I will no longer be working behind the counter at The Quilters Corner and am so pleased that I will still be able to see all the wonderful customers, whom so many have become friends, while I continue to teach there.<br />
<br />
While the jury is out on what I'm going to do with 'Batik Trader', I feel strongly that I have been pointed back in the direction of Lemon Jellie, and I'm excited to share to journey with you.<br />
<br />
Thankyou all for your support and encouragement, <br />
<br />
Squeezes, Michelle <br />

If it looks familiar that's because I have shown a much smaller version of it before. This is the project that began when I went to the workshop in Sydney with <a href="http://bumblebeansinc.blogspot.com.au/" target="_blank">Victoria Findlay Wolfe</a>, and wonderfully inspirational quilting artist from New York (... who has a studio 'loft' in the city.... sigh.....). <br />
<br />
I decided almost straight away that I wanted to have a play with some templates for this quilt and decided on 'Sunburst' being a design I have always loved. <br />
<br />
I still have one border to go, but can't, as yet, find the 'perfect' one. But this is what it looks like so far. Wild and out there and I love it! It has been so much fun to make.<br />

<br />
I finished my new version of pyramid quilt. This time by simply replacing some of the pyramids (triangles) with white (or any 'background' you choose) you create giant hexagons. I really love the effect. Straight line quilting isn't my favourite, in terms of actual sewing, but sometimes this is all a quilt really needs and I really wanted to accentuate the hexie design.<br />
<br />

I fiddled with my 'pyramids on parade' pattern, that's all. In fact, that's not entirely true as it's not the pattern that was altered, just the fabric layout. <br />
<br />
With all the paper piecing I have been doing lately, I realised that my pyramid pattern could form hexies as well, just by adding a background colour which I did. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-eFOx-bP33prwUFkaOLeoGXNqe_6WbBtZVv3GKZ9RNVJi6_LRN5QqxdeVstpfnqoOycsXi17RRak1yDlfVn-XaE8p1TUDKeLzkEcBy-eyvRSG73AYsGVs2lf-K_Z4rRI8RAS8RTP4_Gtc/s1600/love+is.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-eFOx-bP33prwUFkaOLeoGXNqe_6WbBtZVv3GKZ9RNVJi6_LRN5QqxdeVstpfnqoOycsXi17RRak1yDlfVn-XaE8p1TUDKeLzkEcBy-eyvRSG73AYsGVs2lf-K_Z4rRI8RAS8RTP4_Gtc/s320/love+is.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I love the end result, well nearly end, if I would get off my proverbial and baste it! Not quite sure how I'm going to quilt it yet. An 'allover' is the easy option, but I'm thinking I want to make the 'hexies' stand out.<br />
<br />
The fabric is a beautiful range called 'Crazy Love' by Jennifer Paganelli. I fell in love with it (pardon the pun, but I did) as soon I saw it. It is so incredibly vibrant and happy. Not sure if I can let this one sit in the shop for too long, might need to snuggle under it for the rest of winter. And in Queensland, we don't have too much winter so I can't waste time. <br />
<br />
Squeezes, Michelle Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14868542587929533935noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3855788070981082289.post-82732395957572114472013-07-16T11:24:00.002+10:002013-07-16T11:24:33.203+10:00Handprint in time.....So!.... Sally did a BIG clean out of her room which resulted in 3 quilts being pulled out from <strong><em>under</em></strong> the bed (I know I know, wrong... on so many levels!). <br />
<br />
One of these quilts was one I made Sally when she was a toddler, Bowtie Bears by Debbie Mumm. So 'in' at the time. I loved it, and the colours are very typical of what I was making at the time (around 1998 or 99 I think). <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2FY39ufCMLjTeoxAWgZ14Tdi8P3929Z4bwErn6heJEh_aiO0i4rlFF1IEFnzE8YhARM9MCrBChG9i4yQ601tY_Hf4LzQlS-tXHtKWMIGE5bAddYnLezO0JbOVjbtW_5RGuGbzX6DT0Ubx/s1600/bowtie+bears.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2FY39ufCMLjTeoxAWgZ14Tdi8P3929Z4bwErn6heJEh_aiO0i4rlFF1IEFnzE8YhARM9MCrBChG9i4yQ601tY_Hf4LzQlS-tXHtKWMIGE5bAddYnLezO0JbOVjbtW_5RGuGbzX6DT0Ubx/s320/bowtie+bears.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I used to do a lot of hand quilting back then. I loved it, and I only knew how to machine quilt in the ditch which isn't too good for borders. So on this quilt I quilted flowers on stems all around the border (which I had forgotten about because they are so hard to see on this print, but more visible on the back... all the little lessons you learn on the way). <em>Picture shows front and back</em><br />

</tbody></table>
My lovely little find? Well, after washing the quilt I was laying it on the clothes airer, wrong side up, and saw my flowers around the edge. What was that in the corner?? I little hand print. Slowly the memory came back, I had hand quilted the outline of her little hand in the corner of the quilt. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9J9W6ktlSET_wXni1bmAMq5q0VnAqPQpOV7Z13RHnnr-e0zBdQcPDFqlprzr7LcGur6NOpG-I9Qh4ZkoF783fAZXfX2Jro5Da-TvI-cTz0tp0_aH3ZIS7-TB2RzU8L1WKOVXfoIBcvSAc/s1600/sallys+handpring.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9J9W6ktlSET_wXni1bmAMq5q0VnAqPQpOV7Z13RHnnr-e0zBdQcPDFqlprzr7LcGur6NOpG-I9Qh4ZkoF783fAZXfX2Jro5Da-TvI-cTz0tp0_aH3ZIS7-TB2RzU8L1WKOVXfoIBcvSAc/s320/sallys+handpring.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I had completely forgotten about it. It warmed my heart, I couldn't believe it, I just kept looking at this little hand print, thinking of my little smiley Sally Wags. It also always makes me feel sad, thinking of how quickly time has gone by (but lets not go there, it really does make me sad!)<br />
<br />
I wish I had kept this up, what a great way to add to the 'specialness' of a quilt.<br />
<br />
Have a great week,<br />

As part of the 'sorting', she found a phone number on a piece of paper at the bottom of a drawer, mine! You see, sadly, through the process of me moving interstate and a new baby I had lost contact with her.<br />
<br />
I received a text out of the blue one day asking if perhaps I still had this phone number, which I did. Through the emails which followed I was so excited to learn that she was a couple of weeks away from having her first baby. The baby issue was something we had discussed, at great length, many many times, when we had worked together 12 years ago in Canberra. <br />
<br />
So here she was about to bring a little life into the world. Through 'facebook' I got to share many exciting moments before and after the birth. She did it with such beautiful clarity that I was able to relive so many of those special moments with my own 3 babies. And being a 'little' older, and having waited so many years she has loved and treasured EVERY moment. What an absolute joy it has been, sharing this with her newly expanded family. <br />
<br />
I can't tell you how much it has meant to get back in contact with a special friend. <br />
<br />
So if any occasion screams "make a quilt!!!" at me, it was this one. A simple little quilt (made with one charm square and a couple of borders) but made with the same amount of love. I received the most beautiful thankyou note from Helen, which made the joy of giving all the more sweeter.<br />
<br />
So here is Jonty's quilt........<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxldwqTpHXz2IiRdHdJ27Fu3RxdBlz4vb2x7WR9_-dSdsA0urbLHjTSX8VqQMWLlG7U2LSWl2K-V3W0P5_YJ3H2xRr18MWpd01LO1WHYzxrp_ikCfivJm30uNYfoGdX9q-d1zCDYZcSQ6M/s1600/Jonty's+quilt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxldwqTpHXz2IiRdHdJ27Fu3RxdBlz4vb2x7WR9_-dSdsA0urbLHjTSX8VqQMWLlG7U2LSWl2K-V3W0P5_YJ3H2xRr18MWpd01LO1WHYzxrp_ikCfivJm30uNYfoGdX9q-d1zCDYZcSQ6M/s320/Jonty's+quilt.jpg" width="272" /></a></div>
<br />
and a closer up of the applique, for this I always take inspiration from the range of fabric, which in this case was 'bungle jungle'.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJMTZ-yICJ7ubODGL47Zr3aaGOWhbGlksHwPMJiPWf5YNtK1IKE1RmD6KFjU6T_6UtNbksTjH3NIG0WHDpbJdto45x257Ab1utHelNAlhuEQuKCYjM7Jc8KJcJ3V7mhfZ021IAJBTdtiCv/s1600/Jonty%2527s+quilt2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJMTZ-yICJ7ubODGL47Zr3aaGOWhbGlksHwPMJiPWf5YNtK1IKE1RmD6KFjU6T_6UtNbksTjH3NIG0WHDpbJdto45x257Ab1utHelNAlhuEQuKCYjM7Jc8KJcJ3V7mhfZ021IAJBTdtiCv/s320/Jonty%2527s+quilt2.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>

Have a great weekend everyone!<br />

However, the 'top' IS finished and I'm delighted about that. All blocks (36) were completed on retreat, and slowly the blocks put together last week. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn3I8X77Ps7S1YFqPoMWNWFkHFYJgFXRIkRyb7AMKO7qAgXPqLBncaAIJ5wwFL6QqKSB3_yQbJ-v173NKVPczEOmIOp-A-baE7lF-ZPdeLr03IgWVYZodrVafw0UHeoXIALX0j4nghKxjZ/s1600/scrappytrip.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn3I8X77Ps7S1YFqPoMWNWFkHFYJgFXRIkRyb7AMKO7qAgXPqLBncaAIJ5wwFL6QqKSB3_yQbJ-v173NKVPczEOmIOp-A-baE7lF-ZPdeLr03IgWVYZodrVafw0UHeoXIALX0j4nghKxjZ/s320/scrappytrip.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
so.. ta da!!!! I'm very happy with it, and as usual surprised at how differently it looks in the photo. Photos always make the pattern 'pop' so much more. <br />
<br />
I realised during the process of this quilt that after 20+ years of quilt making this is actually my first true 'scrappy' quilt, made out of leftovers. (shameful I know!) I therefore had missed out on a very special trip down memory lane. I found as I stitched those old scraps together that I remember each little (or not so little!) project that had been made along the way. So much fun!<br />
<br />
Squeezes, <br />

One last weekend at Buderim at the Circle Retreat, and one in a fortnight at Toowoomba, with the shop. <br />
<br />
And I love it. A chance to chat, share, eat, chat, eat.... did I mention chat and eat?? Oh, and a little bit of sewing. Well actually, there was a lot of all of that last weekend. I was on a mission and had a pile of pesky UFO's to match it. <br />

I would love to separate these photos out, and show you some more, but I have literally been playing with this post for over a week now and it is just not cooperating, and frankly, I'm over it! None of these quilts are mine, but belong to lovely ladies I get to call my friends. <br />
<br />
It was a great weekend, weather was perfect, company perfect.. everything really.. except for the 90 minute power blackout that had us chewing our fingernails off in fear. Not of the dark of course, just the thought of not being able to sew!<br />

This is the commission quilt I am making for a friends mother-in-law. I'm nearly done, just finishing off the quilting now. <br />

Oh, and Elsie lost another tooth! Pop it in a glass of water?? Under the pillow?? No! Way too simple. Our fairy set ups are getting quite sophisticated in this household. Elsie even took the tip out of a pencil so the fairy could write to her... and made teensy little sandwiches. She left her a comfy chair with a book, and a bed if she needed a little rest. All so sweet and thoughtful... I don't want these days of innocence to end..<br />

<br />
So, today? Just finished my Fancy Free, a class I am currently teaching at the shop. A Quilt as You Go quilt by Moonshine Designs. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijMUYo-fdXzGZI2redYwpvNwQIEu0OuvIpeo0T72X_cpZy_h0mRCoVgVQmx2L4L0MTkvQ2UByD6nzOTO-Od9nX4Bsp03sPp_aUPjxOw3cZXVr0z1_Ls2v2j-6r_tk9JNFo_Nt1l2TDjqEZ/s1600/ff3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijMUYo-fdXzGZI2redYwpvNwQIEu0OuvIpeo0T72X_cpZy_h0mRCoVgVQmx2L4L0MTkvQ2UByD6nzOTO-Od9nX4Bsp03sPp_aUPjxOw3cZXVr0z1_Ls2v2j-6r_tk9JNFo_Nt1l2TDjqEZ/s320/ff3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I am making more blocks for my 'scrappy trip around the world'. I have decided on a 6 x 6 block layout. I have about 15 completed blocks, about another 13 in stages, so maybe I'm about halfway?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsJG5OYXLi22wnZPI6XJ09R1mdppoXq7pP_FO_Pig1fvGa9LUXqae-spaYbND9ljcIQociKWyV9xF3N3TzBPlg33mt8mkx0klAeqPCAoimKcHnxymbPP_GzHTynWL1gaVeY__O10pMci7a/s1600/scrappy+trip1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsJG5OYXLi22wnZPI6XJ09R1mdppoXq7pP_FO_Pig1fvGa9LUXqae-spaYbND9ljcIQociKWyV9xF3N3TzBPlg33mt8mkx0klAeqPCAoimKcHnxymbPP_GzHTynWL1gaVeY__O10pMci7a/s320/scrappy+trip1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I am working on a commissioned quilt for a girlfriend's mother in law. She loved the miniature civil war quilt I made, so I am making a large version of this.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxpQep2st33-hK4m2ocuNITzEw7pMgneqIcg2poRC4o_HQ_ad77Ixnrmb1uMG5xQ0LTPbB4tk0_hXLXfeM36hWs8Y0DEuIQbL74IkkA1-b4spS3tLphUiQvHpmJ1KykYYkSLqm2WW0ERWn/s1600/tammy1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxpQep2st33-hK4m2ocuNITzEw7pMgneqIcg2poRC4o_HQ_ad77Ixnrmb1uMG5xQ0LTPbB4tk0_hXLXfeM36hWs8Y0DEuIQbL74IkkA1-b4spS3tLphUiQvHpmJ1KykYYkSLqm2WW0ERWn/s320/tammy1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And lastly, a quick little baby quilt for a dear friend. She was a great friend when we lived in Canberra, but sadly we lost contact. She recently found my phone number scribbled on a bit of paper going through things at home (no doubt 'nesting') and contacted me hoping I had the same number. I obviously did, and am so thrilled. After 20 years of marriage and at 45 she has just had her first baby, so if that doesn't deserve a quilt, nothing does!<br />
<br />
And what is Elsie up to? Well, as usual there is always SOMETHING going on. When I went outside on this glorious Autumn Sunday morning, I found a little house set up for the fairies. She has chopped up food for them and placed them in containers (note the crumbled chocolate!). They even have plates set on the table ready to go, she never forgets a detail!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhId7YLetHDWYBB23v0tCkf03GpSlEpm0f6fsYD1tIO8qSbQdSozTkJVdkbdBoEDDqtcnQuB67dDyS2RrJc9vGoj_P-U-WVhgAH4p7awOl_g5URYX-BTWJK2bkocImRPOoRE-MxonAoFnne/s1600/elsiesfairlies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhId7YLetHDWYBB23v0tCkf03GpSlEpm0f6fsYD1tIO8qSbQdSozTkJVdkbdBoEDDqtcnQuB67dDyS2RrJc9vGoj_P-U-WVhgAH4p7awOl_g5URYX-BTWJK2bkocImRPOoRE-MxonAoFnne/s320/elsiesfairlies.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I forgot to take a photo of the bundle of fabric, but will post a photo shortly. Just a little charm square quilt.<br />
<br />
Enjoy the rest of Sunday, <br />
<br />

Fancy Free is a QAYG (quilt as you go) pattern by Moonshine Designs, which we are currently teaching at The Quilters Corner. It is great fun and can be made any size you like. I'm doing a queen size for my bed and am using a gorgeous moda range called 'Simply Colour'. <br />

Its been on the go for a couple of weeks, but on the weekend I finally got around to putting the sashing cover strips on. Unfortunately I'm two strips short (grumble grumble), so that will be this afternoons project (grumble grumble... I really don't like 'going back' to do something, can you tell?).<br />

Wow! What an amazing day! It lived up to all my expectations and more, leaving me inspired and excited.<br />
By 8.00am I had been in a car, plane, train and bus and wandered aimlessly through back streets with my little trolley bag trying to find the venue. Once I found my way the lovely ladies from <a href="http://www.materialobsession.com.au/" target="_blank">Material Obsession</a> were literally standing out the front waving me in (I would have given them a thankyou hug but I was too sweaty!!) Thankyou so much Kathy for your warm welcome, it had been a long morning and it was very much appreciated. The venue was beautifully set up, with individually made name tags, pencils, goodies and we had even had individual design boards. <br />
<br />
In the middle of the room, on a massive table was a huge mound of fabric scraps. We were told to grab a pile, but!, it had to be colours we would never normally use and things we didn't particularly like...mmmmm.....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihnZiD0A2h09o2W3Gf17KOQCgrnbxHr8ahAvHye2I99JZTgpnLxccNMr8rytlcxyOBEkUf6PEvuQvwutTfBIGfYn5ohyphenhyphenDE379aNFPLBoBebOh7d9s2zO7RVBbEuqjCSQH6dhdkF87HxgX3/s1600/vf7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihnZiD0A2h09o2W3Gf17KOQCgrnbxHr8ahAvHye2I99JZTgpnLxccNMr8rytlcxyOBEkUf6PEvuQvwutTfBIGfYn5ohyphenhyphenDE379aNFPLBoBebOh7d9s2zO7RVBbEuqjCSQH6dhdkF87HxgX3/s320/vf7.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Victoria then led us on a wonderful journey, the story behind her book "15 Minutes of Play". She first shared many of her quilts talking about the inspiration and story behind them. From there Victoria explained how to begin 'playing' with scraps, joining them to become a larger piece of fabric which we can then use in any way our little creative heart desires. She is an incredibly warm and generous person and I could have listened all day.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em>step 2 of my creation</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Probably the main 'thing' I got from this workshop was a sense of freedom. So often I try to keep my designs and choices fairly commercial, sometimes even stopping myself from going off on a tangent. Well, this technique not only gave me permission to do this, but very practically showed us how. So my little mind was just buzzing with thoughts and ideas the whole (long) way home. <br />
<br />
Before heading home however, I did get to drop into Material Obsession, somewhere I've always wanted to visit. It was just gorgeous, inspiration everywhere you look, amazing colour choices and lots of projects big and small to delight. Well worth a visit for anyone visiting Sydney. <br />
<br />
So thankyou so much Victoria, for broadening my vision and totally inspiring me. It was without a doubt a day I will never forget. Many thanks also to Kathy and the whole team at Material Obsession, for putting the day together and making it possible. We learned something from you all as you walked around and shared your experience and talents also. <br />

Tomorrow morning at sparrows, I will be on my way to Sydney. I'm heading there to take part in a workshop being held by Victoria Findlay Wolfe of <a href="http://bumblebeansinc.blogspot.com.au/" target="_blank">Bumble Beans</a> fame. She is a New York based quilt artist specialising in improvisational techniques, which is what (strangely enough!!) that she is teaching tomorrow. This is the book which she released at the end of last year.<br />

It will be a mad crazy day, testing my ability to use untested (by me) public transport in a new place, and be back home by dinner (assuming it is a late pizza!). I had a class last night, one tonight, then a class Saturday morning. From there take #3 to a birthday party, then pick up #1 from her GAMSAT exam. I can't even look forward to a nice cold wine on Saturday night as Sunday sees me compete in a 10km event. <br />
<br />
I'm exhausted already, but cannot wait...!!!!!<br />
<br />
So check back to see how I got on and have a look at some piccies! (not sure about post race though, I'm pretty sure you would find it hard to see any facial features through the red puffiness anyway).<br />

Done! And... I have to say... I'm not too proud say I'm pretty happy with it! I really was concerned to see how all those colours would work out, but I was thrilled. I normally work in 'pretty' colours, so it was great for me to work outside of my comfort zone. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I really do love this patterns, it really does work in any combination colours, and is great for putting together a masculine quilt as I have done. For those who missed the earlier post, this quilt is a for a wonderful young man (sound so 'old' when I say that!) who we (as a family) think the world of. It was his farewell gift for joining the RAAF, and beginning at ADFA (Defence Force Academy). The colour choice is a combination of his favourite soccer teams, Socceroos, The Roar and Manchester United. I gave it to Tammy, Jason and Sara to take down to Canberra for his ceremony yesterday. They were absolutely rapt which always makes it so worthwhile. I just hope that Zac likes it too. </div>
<br />
Congratulations Zac, we are very proud of you and love you lots!<br />

Have a great weekend, <br />

<br />
<br />
I have spent many hours at my machine this week (evident by the very sore muscles in the left side of my neck!), doing a 'different' sort of project. I was asked to make a banner (= quilt to me) for our church for a theme they are following for the year. I was given a rough design. I was more than a little nervous only because I can't draw to save myself, and as it was pictorial, I was concerned about getting the proportions correct. Well, all was going well, then I met with my pastor to show him my 'mock up', but discovered I had my dates wrong (surprise surprise!!), and instead of a 10 day time frame I had 2. Oops!! So, home again home again jiggety jiggety jig I went (but a little faster this time) and hit the machine. <br />
<br />
I actually thought I would be able to whip it up pretty quick, BUT, the buttonholing around the lettering was so time consuming! By 12.30 am I had it together but had only outlined the hand, plate and 4 letters. I had to work the next day til lunchtime, then wizzed home (no old man driving for me!) and kept going. I managed to watch an entire series of (12 episodes) of a show just while outlining and quilting. The machine could only go so fast and I estimated I spent about 8 -10 sitting there. <br />
<br />
I then had to work again Saturday morning, so darling daughter #1 started to stitch down the binding for me and I finished when I got home from work. So it was finally finished and hanging ready for Sunday service. I was quite pleased about the finished product.<br />
<br />
Elsie, who attends the primary school attached to the church was proud when she got home from school yesterday. They had chapel in the morning and she was sitting just near the banner and told me how she told all her friends that her Mum had made it... isnt' that cute?<br />
<br />
Have a great week, <br />
Michelle xx<br />
<br />
p.s. my tip for the week... stretch! Even though I felt fine while I was sewing (I think there was too much adrenaline to feel anything), I must have knotted everything up and am still paying today. So stretch ladies, stretch!Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14868542587929533935noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3855788070981082289.post-13063565016932699532013-02-05T12:39:00.000+10:002013-02-05T12:39:08.058+10:00Civil War MiniatureI've been working on this little delight for a little while. I have a huge amount of civil war fabrics left over, from my hexies, so a miniature quilt was a great way to use them up!
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjgg_2Hi76KH38H1ZCMABKgvxY60ApNhuGkt8DmORex7g-62SPMX8YgDZGhQkQLH81r2Qj4eG7vOM8R_Mui2j2qcKiYxXZXBvz-Xkm5a58vVQfm5UfGisiLz4wEOIXXLJ2et4fQ0LFwuT2/s1600/P2050410.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjgg_2Hi76KH38H1ZCMABKgvxY60ApNhuGkt8DmORex7g-62SPMX8YgDZGhQkQLH81r2Qj4eG7vOM8R_Mui2j2qcKiYxXZXBvz-Xkm5a58vVQfm5UfGisiLz4wEOIXXLJ2et4fQ0LFwuT2/s320/P2050410.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
As usual, I go flat out, then once that itch has been satisfied, move on to the next 'to be' unfinished project. Well, I quilted this over the wet spell (ok torrential rain and flooding) we had in Brisbane recently, and have just finished binding (while watching 'The Help'.. again... love that movie!!) <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3QiPrhdGiAyNph7lKAv0RRIGKe5b_dap_nPxel1B6KH7nfnUV3iyhNCtapGdl2GCgP-t6_4VVijY0Dj12EurhUYL77qR3UtHHUQh0go8ZOW4mCkOnxP4ylIFw0mu7RY5ortAHof_CmNoR/s1600/P2050409.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3QiPrhdGiAyNph7lKAv0RRIGKe5b_dap_nPxel1B6KH7nfnUV3iyhNCtapGdl2GCgP-t6_4VVijY0Dj12EurhUYL77qR3UtHHUQh0go8ZOW4mCkOnxP4ylIFw0mu7RY5ortAHof_CmNoR/s320/P2050409.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I did debate how much quilting to put in. Quick and easy ditch (which I dont' find exactly satisfying) or free motion feathers. I'm glad I went with the feathers, I thoroughly enjoy this while it doubles for well needed therapy. I did need to ditch around the little pieced blocks, and for the first time, I free motioned this to avoiding all the frustrating and neck breaking turning and pulling it requires. It is a lot more time consuming, but again, worth the effort. <br />
<br />

This pattern was from 'Civil War Legacies' by Carol Hopkin, and has a finished size of 31" x 36"<br />

What's a girls to do I ask??<br />
<br />
This gorgeous new fabric which I am madly in love with is aptly named... "Crazy Love" by Jennifer Paganelli. I arrived in our humble little shop just before Christmas but I didn't have time to play. Yesterday I found time (ok, MADE time) and cut out an new variation on my Pyramid Parade pattern. Its the same pyramids but with a completely different effect due to fabric placement (I've always loved the way you can make the same pattern so different). Hopefully it will be put together very soon and I can show you... oh yeah... and Zacs. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
You can see here Zacs 'square in a square' blocks (NOT square with borders! ;) ) sitting patiently in the top right hand corner, with my new fabrics in the forefront.<br />
<br />
Sheesh! Better get a move on!<br />

I'm hoping that it is indeed a sign of what is to come. <br />
<br />
Now you may look at the photo below and think.... what?? And I agree with you! These are not colours of my choice but they do have a special meaning. Zac is the son of very good friends of ours and in a couple of weeks he fly's the nest. He has been accepted into the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra as an intelligence officer with the Royal Australian Air Force (near and dear to my husband and I as we met when we were both in the RAAF). So! I needed a special present, and of course and I didn't need to think too long. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKHp_URSZPfvarlPzGlQ2Q_AMwaFRnzogcCBpqjlsIOoU1Hy8sAyVlvAXmohWAo9urDEENUeuc3UHjlZj05SOrmgL1ywZhqx1olvsgXAcu8uDja8RmHEs4mftb6dSoUzs91EprsED03gYT/s1600/zac1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKHp_URSZPfvarlPzGlQ2Q_AMwaFRnzogcCBpqjlsIOoU1Hy8sAyVlvAXmohWAo9urDEENUeuc3UHjlZj05SOrmgL1ywZhqx1olvsgXAcu8uDja8RmHEs4mftb6dSoUzs91EprsED03gYT/s320/zac1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I am doing a very basic 'square in a square' quilt, which is never fail, quick, masculine quilt. Our Zac is a mad keen soccer (sorry! 'football') fan (nut), so these colours represent his favourite teams. The green and gold for Australia, red/orange/black and white for Manchester United, and orange/white black for the Roar (Brisbane). The blocks will then be sashed in black. I will post photos of the finished product.<br />
<br />
Before I could even contemplate sewing today however, I needed to tidy my pigsty of a sewing room and actually make a path to the sewing machine. My sewing room still isn't ideal, but I do have a sewing machine on a table (great help... sewing on the floor sucks) and a cutting table actually being used for its intended purpose (a treat indeed!). <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpsY5PhQA_4nmfiY36t3ht8y_FFMyJhQ9WVUKvHI5TCOd5Ys3Dx4xcLf8G9hGLfYJHyrQeMNi_1LPSL0GaqbtoSNzaRI6dPFfHO39KQz_Z1JOVsweS1h9p-GLCSrgrxQrHY_Oqsi8RXd_6/s1600/sewing+r.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpsY5PhQA_4nmfiY36t3ht8y_FFMyJhQ9WVUKvHI5TCOd5Ys3Dx4xcLf8G9hGLfYJHyrQeMNi_1LPSL0GaqbtoSNzaRI6dPFfHO39KQz_Z1JOVsweS1h9p-GLCSrgrxQrHY_Oqsi8RXd_6/s320/sewing+r.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So without further adieu (to you and you and youuuuuu..... sorry... 'Sound of music' came into my head), I will make a start on those square in square blocks (although according to a customer the other day, this is completely inaccurate as it is a 'square with borders'... isn't it?? sheesh!... I did try and explain my way of thinking, but she smiled and shook her head, so I bit my tongue!)<br />
<br />

p.s. I'm very proud of myself as I have blogged every day so far this year, quite an achievement!Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14868542587929533935noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3855788070981082289.post-16544788874577239352012-12-27T12:01:00.000+10:002012-12-27T12:01:46.045+10:00Christmas 2012I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! Mine certainly has been as I've been surrounded by family and friends, with some more very welcome visits still to come. <br />
<br />
I didn't get any sewing done, but for the first time in years I did manage to do some traditional Christmas goodie baking, which was very rewarding. And my nieces and nephews now tell me that 'my' rocky road (secret recipe courtesy of my sister) has now taken over the number one position from 'jelly slice'!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8K2FhCjeOS0KIzwuPIUOKAW0rCeqb12UgsAwtviQF-Y761wO7zv3S46PCWy6Zb28WNUQ2PsnJQ0zyBNlcAy8Zhkjmj8Od7tIs-oACaTjgGqrCQgZWV3K__fKhnS367tx_bLHmrLF6LTGC/s1600/christmas+2012.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8K2FhCjeOS0KIzwuPIUOKAW0rCeqb12UgsAwtviQF-Y761wO7zv3S46PCWy6Zb28WNUQ2PsnJQ0zyBNlcAy8Zhkjmj8Od7tIs-oACaTjgGqrCQgZWV3K__fKhnS367tx_bLHmrLF6LTGC/s320/christmas+2012.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I was lucky enough to be spoilt with a very nice new camera. I have been frustrated with the quality of my old one for a while, especially when trying to photograph detail in quilts, so I'm hoping to bring you lots of lovely pics this year. Of course it is not all down to the camera, the person behind it has just a little to do with it also, so I'm thinking a little course might also be on the cards!<br />
<br />
Speaking with on the cards..... so is lots of quilting!! I can't wait. I can't wait to get my hands on some fabric and let my creative juices flow. And I wish the same for you.. may your 2013 be filled with many blessings, not the least being time to create...<br />
<br />
Much love, <br />
Michelle xxMichellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14868542587929533935noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3855788070981082289.post-12301815128895603852012-11-08T22:44:00.000+10:002012-11-08T22:44:00.583+10:00Binding TutorialI did promise to get back to you with my binding method...<br />
I also contemplated doing a video tutorial but that would involve you (and worse still... ME!), listening to my voice, and I just couldn't cope with that just yet!<br />
<br />
So, I use a 2.5" strip for binding (unless using flannel in which case I use 3"). It needs to be the length of the perimeter (outside edge) of the quilt, plus a minimum of 15" (40cm). It needs to be continuous and ironed in half lenghtwise.<br />
<br />
Pick a starting point (I usually pick a side, about 2/3 the way down). Leave a tail of at least 8" (this gives a little wriggle room at the end), and on the right side of quilt, match raw edge of binding with the raw edge of quilt. Pin from here down to the first corner.
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEir014oQIgaQ0gGwhDmXuoGG8Iiej7uRcrut8J6wrjvZvshl0i_cV93wxTW4dhEvSMF-JS3OHWqFh0YRxkwhKf-T3xAb_ACzE6TQzRTNtbQMl5AL9qUFQfWZiQAzrVj8M7P7KgZ6oK1fCs1/s1600/b1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEir014oQIgaQ0gGwhDmXuoGG8Iiej7uRcrut8J6wrjvZvshl0i_cV93wxTW4dhEvSMF-JS3OHWqFh0YRxkwhKf-T3xAb_ACzE6TQzRTNtbQMl5AL9qUFQfWZiQAzrVj8M7P7KgZ6oK1fCs1/s320/b1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I stitch about a 3/8" seam allowance (1/4" is too narrow and will leave your binding too thin, 1/2" will be too thick and when you pull your binding over to the back to hand stitch down, it will not cover your stitch line.<br />
<br />
Stop 3/8" from the corner, you can reverse here, then take out from the machine. Turn your quilt as if you are about to sew down the next side (which, oddly, you are!). <br />
Fold your binding up, so the raw edges from your binding are in line with the raw edges of your quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQv4bUI38iXo_UV6y80h4FSmh65Vc_N7r89bLsUuKtHShR5HPBjWnQApyOZKzDVzSD5ZfccHewZL0TNT1EQIpGSpkw9eJit2PEO-1cNtdG0wtutl5Zd-uPCwGV03yxUtr9VaOYM5UFImCD/s1600/binding+(9).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQv4bUI38iXo_UV6y80h4FSmh65Vc_N7r89bLsUuKtHShR5HPBjWnQApyOZKzDVzSD5ZfccHewZL0TNT1EQIpGSpkw9eJit2PEO-1cNtdG0wtutl5Zd-uPCwGV03yxUtr9VaOYM5UFImCD/s320/binding+(9).JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Now fold again downwards, so that raw edges are aligned on the side and the 'fold' of the corner is in line with your raw edges on the previous side. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq7lJKYUK6OLorBhW2h5aJLgUJEbyO2y384wCT-9ZmM-Sa0S2d5_g0EJkfHHF97U0kCcRCNjGT2dwgWdl8UuSOL7yTPSANOIy2Gb07Ka5AdIYTGhy5R3pBdeUlnIInfdkmOfm1nkW3lioh/s1600/binding+%25288%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq7lJKYUK6OLorBhW2h5aJLgUJEbyO2y384wCT-9ZmM-Sa0S2d5_g0EJkfHHF97U0kCcRCNjGT2dwgWdl8UuSOL7yTPSANOIy2Gb07Ka5AdIYTGhy5R3pBdeUlnIInfdkmOfm1nkW3lioh/s320/binding+%25288%2529.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
You can now sew down this side (right from the top) until you get to 3/8" from the corner. Repeat all corners the same way. <br />
<br />
When you are on your final side, stop, and leave a gap of no less than 8" from where you started. <br />
Now for the fun bit!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj53BMMTB4slzy2-Ha9CO3n26ey7_eosTaJ_j9wqFj_VXLU4U1qSuGy1acNSePxYKH837oUA08qhGn6E0vPUWF5RJODNIjz7QH5_kEBmYgCX28JFsMGKHgxhKPcu3Fj4JblsGLWXN0Sw-jy/s1600/binding+%25287%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj53BMMTB4slzy2-Ha9CO3n26ey7_eosTaJ_j9wqFj_VXLU4U1qSuGy1acNSePxYKH837oUA08qhGn6E0vPUWF5RJODNIjz7QH5_kEBmYgCX28JFsMGKHgxhKPcu3Fj4JblsGLWXN0Sw-jy/s320/binding+%25287%2529.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
You have two tails. Cut one tail so it is just over half way (make sure it is a straight cut and at 90degrees). <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAj3FMUUCuAl8BNQp1H1UwUdnzxdq-DTJSHXF3y8W_EzXKLRP1w37btzgpk8fkSKR13Olp8LIbESer6MlfKsnInZLL5XyC4-gionKiKf-r6nIF0k1fwbpu3BxCMIK3wuLcmp2m57n64Ctp/s1600/binding+%25286%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAj3FMUUCuAl8BNQp1H1UwUdnzxdq-DTJSHXF3y8W_EzXKLRP1w37btzgpk8fkSKR13Olp8LIbESer6MlfKsnInZLL5XyC4-gionKiKf-r6nIF0k1fwbpu3BxCMIK3wuLcmp2m57n64Ctp/s320/binding+%25286%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Lay the other tail on top, and measure on overlap of exactly(!!) 2.5". And cut (eek!! ... make sure you have this right). <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmRJATjpVM_iTOARyrwKLt7wF4SVwBAMccDqfFKNHILaLzLJYdS5HxdMggLlc47BNJ2AjJTjm91QMteIYbKSp7iM6q8Bounk6LY4vMHe-AGFXr80YUnI2dZ-Cd8TqoqzrCEtfARjfNZVY9/s1600/binding+%25285%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmRJATjpVM_iTOARyrwKLt7wF4SVwBAMccDqfFKNHILaLzLJYdS5HxdMggLlc47BNJ2AjJTjm91QMteIYbKSp7iM6q8Bounk6LY4vMHe-AGFXr80YUnI2dZ-Cd8TqoqzrCEtfARjfNZVY9/s320/binding+%25285%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Now, join the two ends on a diagonal by placing them at right angles (as you do your binding strips).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8X4iV7GUjOlRZk1Z5ev-8Aut5uksnP_K1LLErhBard0hapMzhkPeHKLP8JScCNRogNdptaILCnv1Oqou5-uY6T1yJGcmFjhmo2ikWa7g1Tyh4dTdhgeTwz4YB49ggH25bdrTzgM4VDqYG/s1600/binding+%25284%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8X4iV7GUjOlRZk1Z5ev-8Aut5uksnP_K1LLErhBard0hapMzhkPeHKLP8JScCNRogNdptaILCnv1Oqou5-uY6T1yJGcmFjhmo2ikWa7g1Tyh4dTdhgeTwz4YB49ggH25bdrTzgM4VDqYG/s320/binding+%25284%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Before you cut off the seam allowance, pull out and make sure it sit flat, which it should do perfectly of course (that's because you're an expert now!!), then trim off, sew the binding down to the final gap and your done... well.... except for hand sewing in down on the other side of course!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxNNhCx4TKzClKYTu-CdU8Guq2cRfmjLkhYTUfJS37WWgrDZ8HJzO3qdVlxkSaO9xKNlx08O-3X7AhDsLNxYw5xddDjV8yPnfw-QPVvEMFKu39Cy8Z5Ekw2eYIMlAIXfi1Cw0WUueMn-3b/s1600/binding+%25283%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxNNhCx4TKzClKYTu-CdU8Guq2cRfmjLkhYTUfJS37WWgrDZ8HJzO3qdVlxkSaO9xKNlx08O-3X7AhDsLNxYw5xddDjV8yPnfw-QPVvEMFKu39Cy8Z5Ekw2eYIMlAIXfi1Cw0WUueMn-3b/s320/binding+%25283%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS9_-aOg2NSeQw2mFTv7-zEF_TFKbKZlR8njzoCnEfW8WaVPCsPSQZBfPnUOunCPcFEip7EJUVQYoqNM1Sd4iWj5EDovbuW37YhRhIHrb_1Zkt-5HKOwT_znHD_jJwhbn58hb6wnOvUc0a/s1600/binding+(2).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS9_-aOg2NSeQw2mFTv7-zEF_TFKbKZlR8njzoCnEfW8WaVPCsPSQZBfPnUOunCPcFEip7EJUVQYoqNM1Sd4iWj5EDovbuW37YhRhIHrb_1Zkt-5HKOwT_znHD_jJwhbn58hb6wnOvUc0a/s320/binding+(2).JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
when I pin my binding down , I tend to do so only one section at a time, otherwise as I manoevre my quilt, it pricks me, causing me to say less than savoury words (I have no control of course.. especially since binding often involves a glass of wine!). It is a simple blind stitch, taking care to travel your thread within the layers so as not to be visible. Fold the corners neatly, like you would wrap a present.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoiznzDcU7B-1CC7gfIz-CpjX5Z-02VMtEjRT7RA7nZSigm3Hcbnoe35XoiPTO5nOX_PGjP-BB9Vt0Bm1asfumRwRuZd1fe0eyu4aIq6i_MPXJfGldaPh5-CEHMARwh7EZwU9aONk26m4j/s1600/b5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoiznzDcU7B-1CC7gfIz-CpjX5Z-02VMtEjRT7RA7nZSigm3Hcbnoe35XoiPTO5nOX_PGjP-BB9Vt0Bm1asfumRwRuZd1fe0eyu4aIq6i_MPXJfGldaPh5-CEHMARwh7EZwU9aONk26m4j/s320/b5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Incidentally this is actually one of my favourite parts of quilt making, sewing down the binding. To me, you have put a lot of love, time and effort... perhaps passion (and maybe even a tad of blood sweat and lot of tears) into this quilt, and now this is it. The 'piece de resistance', or as I like to say the 'icing on the cake'! I find it completely satisfying, if not a tad time consuming (especially when I have to stop to pat myself on the back regularly!)<br />
<br />
So sit back and enjoy crossing the finishing line!<br />
<br />
Michelle xxx<br />
<br />
p.s. It might amuse you to know that I had almost finished sewing the binding down and taken most of the photos, when I noticed that I had sewn it to the back of the quilt... arrrghhhh (more unsavoury words!!). Another lesson.. when you aren't feeling well and dosed up on cold and flu tablets, perhaps it is best to leave sewing til another time! (this is why, if you are really observant, you will notice a difference in fabric on the border.. its because in some photos, its actually the back!)Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14868542587929533935noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3855788070981082289.post-87845620389252599762012-10-29T18:47:00.000+10:002012-10-29T18:47:08.899+10:00Quilting my bargello.....I finally got to sit down in front of the machine on the weekend (and today), and have loved every minute! I have been having a lot of fun quilting my bargello quilt (remember that??) with an all over free motion. I can completely lose myself when I free motion quilt.. I just get in a groove and off I go... lose track of time (as daughter #2 impatiently waiting to be picked up from work will confirm! ...oops). But fun I had, which after all, IS the main aim of the game!<br />
<br />
Here is a close up of my little 'wiggly jig' that I did.. just a big doodle really.. and as usual I got in the groove of it by practising on paper first, just to get an idea of 'where' I would go. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Orm5lS0l8qQELTO1A4LEJ6H3fndLg0vxPIAKCDKHSadtzm2u3lkxYmGhtPW3Y4UaPx7tcgsyjecFkTH9arg4LM3JWi4Y_tEZ9he-N_0EkqDZzcXGAUKCEBSwwnRWRQOkiFpJPCj2xbMS/s1600/bargello+freemotion.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6Orm5lS0l8qQELTO1A4LEJ6H3fndLg0vxPIAKCDKHSadtzm2u3lkxYmGhtPW3Y4UaPx7tcgsyjecFkTH9arg4LM3JWi4Y_tEZ9he-N_0EkqDZzcXGAUKCEBSwwnRWRQOkiFpJPCj2xbMS/s320/bargello+freemotion.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I used a specialised thread, something which I have not really had a lot of success with before. It was 'wonderfil' and I placed in both the top and in the bobbin. It was perfectly variegated in the colours of my quilt. The only problem was it came off the spool too easily whilst sewing, therefore knotting up often. Liisa had told me a tip to help with this was to pop the spool in a cup on the table, this helped a little but not entirely. My cup accidentally fell over at one stage, and with it 'accidentally' finding me a solution! A cup on the side, who would have thought? But it worked! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkdPVS4CrwzzFxRbVs5zXa5oofG4jpz3n8Y61eL54jEDHkqfLrNOH80dfNWP8PoEsG9a-oyktCwVsikmUGV_HK5FXUxMrzbUwT63cTLqL4hZJkFWHJIrkxTEzZUbLQtkS4RnQi1b8i6suN/s1600/bargello+cup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkdPVS4CrwzzFxRbVs5zXa5oofG4jpz3n8Y61eL54jEDHkqfLrNOH80dfNWP8PoEsG9a-oyktCwVsikmUGV_HK5FXUxMrzbUwT63cTLqL4hZJkFWHJIrkxTEzZUbLQtkS4RnQi1b8i6suN/s320/bargello+cup.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So tonight? Binding! I will do a little tutorial on this as I have been asked to show my preferred method. So pop back in a day or so to take a look at this.<br />
<br />
Oh, and my little Elsie has been sewing up a storm recently... although I must teach her NOT to cut into the middle of my fat 1/4's when she needs a little scrap (eeeek!). I let her have the use of my machine as I believe experimentation is the best teacher... But.... what I am most intrigued about is her technique... The chair has gone, which I understand as she often stands up to sew, but now the foot pedal has turned up on the top of the table, and I have no idea how she can possibly operate the machine! <br />
<br />
